Project Summary
PEL 91 is one of the cornerstone areas of Great Artesian’s exploration efforts in the ‘brownfields’ Cooper Basin area. Exploration is focused on oil targets close to the ‘Permian zero edge’. This is where the Permo-Triassic Cooper Basin sediments rapidly thin across shallowing basement.
PEL 91 is located on the extreme south-western flank of the Patchawarra Trough. Because of the similarity of the geological setting of significant producing oil fields in the adjacent PEL 92, PEL 91 is considered highly prospective for oil. As such, it will be a key focus of activity during 2008.
The permit lies directly to the north of the Sellicks’ and Christie’s oil discoveries made in 2002 and the Callawonga discovery made in 2006 in adjacent PEL 92. There have been oil discoveries at Growler and Windaway to the north, confirming the "oil fairway". Great Artesian has a 60% interest and Beach Petroleum Limited has earned a 40% interest through a farmin.
Following acquisition of the Mytilus and Cadulus seismic surveys, over twenty structural targets have been identified (see Photo Gallery), with the most prospective forming the basis for exploration drilling.
PEL 91, covering an area of 2,964 km2, is one of three South Australian Cooper Basin permits originally awarded to Great Artesian on a 100% basis.
