Moana-1 was plugged an abandoned. The well tested an anticlinal closure on the southwestern flank of the Patchawarra Trough in PEL 107, approximately 69km west of Moomba. The closest wells are Hollows-1, 9.5 km to the southeast, Lycium-1, 7km to the north and Sturt-8, 10.5km to the southeast. The Lake Hope Oil Fields are approximately 11 kilometres to the southeast while the Sellicks oil field (drilled July 2002) is approximately 17km to the north.
The Poolowanna and Patchawarra formations were the primary targets of the well whilst the Namur Sandstone and Hutton Sandstone were considered secondary targets.
Moana-1 spudded on the 15th of July, 2003 and reached a total depth of 2256m in the Late Carboniferous/Early Permian Merrimelia Formation on the 26th July 2003. The main target formations were intersected within 10 metres of the prognosed depths while the Merrimelia Formation was encountered about 27m high.
There were no shows during drilling however fluorescence was recorded from sidewall cores over some intervals in the Patchawarra Formation. These zones had minor associated gas shows during drilling. A post logging drill stem test (DST 1) covering these intervals resulted in no fluid to surface and a recovery of 235m of muddy water.
The well was plugged and abandoned and the rig released on the 31st July 2003
