Kiana-1 was Great Artesian’s first producing oil well.
The well was drilled on the Spencer – Muteroo Horst in the southern Cooper Basin and is located on the southern edge of the Patchawarra Trough, about 2 km northeast and 2.5 km southwest of the Spencer and Muteroo Oilfields respectively, and 35 km west of Moomba.
The well was designed to test a small but well defined 4-way dip structural closure mapped at the Namur and Hutton horizons on the greater Spencer - Muteroo Basement high. The primary targets at Kiana-1 were the Early Cretaceous Namur Sandstone / McKinlay Member (oil); Jurassic Hutton / Birkhead Formation (oil) with secondary targets being the Early Cretaceous Murta Fm (oil) and the Permian Patchawarra Formation (oil and/or gas).
Kiana-1 spudded on the 21st August 2005 (08:00 hrs). The well was drilled to a total depth of 2017m, reached at 03:00 hrs on 12th September.
Five drill stem tests were attempted. DST-1 (a misrun) was conducted over the McKinlay Member as a conventional on-bottom test. DST-2, resulted in a strong air blow on opening with water flowing to surface at 120 bbls per day after 83 minutes. There were no indications of oil. DST-3 was conducted in the Patchawarra Formation and resulted in a weak air blow on opening, no fluid to surface.
DST-4 was conducted in the Patchawarra Formation and resulted in gas to surface in 4 min, flowing at 2.9 mmscfd (stabilised) and oil to surface in 9 min, flowing at 1100 bbls per day, through a 0.5” choke. A final drill stem test (DST-5) was attempted, but abandoned due to deteriorating hole conditions.
Kiana-1 was completed with Century Rig 3 as a new oil field discovery. The well was perforated over an interval in the Patchawarra Formation and flowed to the tank at approximately 1152 bbls oil per day (flowing tubing pressure 300 psi).
The rig was released on 18th September 2005 at 18:00 hours.
