Despite oil fluorescence, this well did not flow hydrocarbons.
Goolwa-1 tested an anticlinal closure on the southern flank of the Patchawarra Trough in PEL 107, approximately 47km west of Moomba. The closest wells are Raven-1, 9.0 km to the north, Lake Hope-1, 8 km to the west and Spencer West-1, 9.0 km to the southeast. The Patchawarra Formation was the primary target of the well.
Goolwa-1 spudded on the 9th of April, 2004 and reached a total depth of 2684.0m in the Late Carboniferous/Early Permian Merrimelia Formation on the 25th April 2004. The main target, the Patchawarra Formation was intersected less than 10 metres high to prognosis while the underlying Merrimelia Formation was encountered about 50 metres high. Oil fluorescence shows were described in ditch cuttings from the Patchawarra Formation across the intervals 2535-2541m; 2586-2601m; 2616-2661m, and in sidewall cores from 2642.2m; 2632.0m; 2601.0m. Increases in background gas in the ditch cuttings also occurred across these zones. Two DST’s were conducted in the Patchawarra Formation, DST 1 (2609-2631m) failed to flow hydrocarbons and recovered 830m water cushion. DST 2 (2340-2350m) experienced packer failure and recovered 165m water cushion plus 634m muddy formation fluid. A quick look log analysis interprets 1.5 m of pay of which 1.5m is within the interval tested by DST-1 and shown to be tight.
