Operated by Great Artesian (75%) Smegsy produced the first third-party gas within the South Australian Cooper Basin. Until then, all other gas fields had been operated by the Santos led South Australian Cooper Basin Producers (SACBP). As such Smegsy gas production represents a milestone for not only Great Artesian but also for other junior oil and gas explorers, in that it demonstrated the commerciality of gas exploration within this portion of the basin.

Gas was produced through a 4 km tie-in pipeline to existing pipeline infrastructure owned and operated by the SACBP. It is transported by pipeline to the Moomba treatment facility approximately 60 km to the east where it is refined into its various components. Great Artesian received payment for its sales gas, LPG and condensate components. Initial gas production commenced on 1 March 2006. Gas production ceased due to the ingress of water from one of the two producing horizons. As the gas contract has terminated, there are no immediate plans for further production.
